gosh what a long time between posts... I am not a blogger by nature!

so much has happened too. I went to Sydney and Brisbane to do the Finders Keepers markets there with Belinda of Brkich. Both long weekends were just lovely and quite a success! Met lots of lovely fellow makers, and sampled the various charms of each city location.

Most recently we did the State of Design Festival bumper edition Craft Hatch market at thousand pound bend last weekend, such a great location. And I was even allowed to man the stall by myself for the first time, and no great disasters happened either!

Finders Keepers March Market

Great fun had by all a couple of weekends ago at the 2nd Melbourne Finders Keepers Market. Here are some obligatory shaky over excited happy snaps of the stall I shared with my market buddy Belinda of Brkich.

Check out my new florally range of wooden photographic earrings and also limited edition hand drawn cloud brooches and raindrop earrings that literally flew off the shelves! Apart from the massive cloud brooches, it seems its just me who likes to sport ridiculously large brooches... All the little cute ones disappeared though and were the surprise best seller of the weekend- yipee!

Belinda of Brkich did an excellent version too and lovely local maker Simply Phoebe gave us a little shout out in her blog post about the market too (AND she makes great fabric necklaces AND she bought a brooch from me, how nice!)

florally foliage inspiration for new range!

My latest range (one of, more to follow...) was inspired particularly by these 3 images. Arent they lovely, dont you just want to wear them on your ears......?

The first is a gorgeous old floral couch just hanging around on the porch at a country hotel we stayed in (yes I wish I had made them an offer). The next is my big big brother taking a dive in our back garden at home, which in summer at least if always full on florally and green. And also a certain someone honeymooning in the middle of nowhere in Norway, surrounded by leafy texture and moss.

my oh my how time flies! what a long time between posts...

here (at last) are some lovely new things. geometrics and triangles are totally in right now.

wood is paler, colours are neutral and pink and textured, new range includes hexagons, kites, triangles and odd sided jewel shapes.

oh what happy crafty memories. hundreds of tissue paper pom pom's handmade with enthusiasm and a bit of champagne fuelled encouragement. strung up by most excellent (and tall) brother lewis, they decorated the village hall for the apres wedding party.

meanwhile back at jenhalldesigns HQ things are ticking along. just finished a couple of pieces for the linden postcard show, handed in at 5 to 5 yesterday with the usual last minute wave of panic. all december was busy making hand drawn xmas postcards and presents of course, cushions etc.... but thankfully things have been selling well at grangie and breathing colours and modamuse, especially the new norway series...

hmmm... having a little blogging trouble, forgotten how this works. the effect is nice tho- lots and lots of 'fleather' brooches from the lovely belinda at brkich. and the one on the bottom middle is mine- hurrah!!! (dont you love swapping!)

beautifully constructed huge wings, with clever and graceful hat-pin broochy bit on the back, super light and easy to wear. i have worn mine twice since i acquired in on sunday at the skirt and shirt market.

well done to belle and brkich and all those lovely empty hangers......!

out of the chaos of the last few weeks came lots of lovely new things for my stockists, to tide them over for the next couple of months when i will be HOME IN SCOTLAND!! yipee!

for Cube (art+design) in Hobart and Breathing Colours in Sydney i made a selection of the new 'winter collection' earrings and brooches- available instore now!

there is a package in the post for modamuse too so lots of new items soon to arrive in their fabulous online shop. and a fine little selection for Found my way in Invercargill, NZ.

and for the melbournites a top up of the cute round photographic earring, little studs in various designs (inc graphic black and white and some brights too, as well as the very popular Tokyo pink blossom......) to Gallery Grangie in Richmond. This compact and funky gallery located at 323 Lennox St and sporting some very desireable hand spun and knitted alpaca scarves in beautiful milky shades in the window....

beautiful printed purple woolen fabric, very unusual and quite aged! i LOVE it...

what a fabulously odd design- pink and orange and grey AND yellow.

pretty blossomy red and turquoise silk print. salvaged from unpicked vintage kimono.

selection of vintage kimono cushions now stocked with 'Found', a great new design boutique up in Daylesford. full of fabulous objects and local labels, well worth a day trip... (any excuse really!)

i have been making these cushions for a while now, mainly as custom orders and as presents for friends. i love to contrast geometric patterns and stripes with odd florals and unusual prints. the fabrics are mostly silks, salvaged from vintage japanese kimono's and obi's. each piece very unique.

reverse of cushions feature crossover backs to insert inner (100% duck feathers and down), neutral shades and textures of cotton, linen and silks.

well the official launch was a couple of weekends ago at the last Craft Hatch Market- yipee for everyone who bought a pair!! and for all the other designers who did swaps!!

the lovely new range is very melbourne, very winter....

dark and abstract landscapes with flashes of light, monotones, city/urban patterns and textures, illumination. featuring photographs compiled from all over the place, from Moroccan tiles to Tokyo alleyways. round brooches come in 2 sizes (7cm and 4cm) and can be worn in multiples or singly (i have been known to wear 3 at once but thats just me!). look great pinned to a winter jacket.

earrings feature similarly soft abstract images, and are finished with a layer of resin. each pair unique. super light and wearable. fun.

We had such a lovely time in Sydney afew months ago. It did rain the WHOLE weekend though and as a result 'Diana' the camera had to stay wrapped up in a plastic bag most of the time. This is the one picture we have from our adventures, a double exposure (happy accident) of a flower arrangement in city centre park, and of course the famous Opera House on a VERY stormy day.

What a lonely little picture.....

We had a lovely day at the Craft Hatch Market at the City Library at the weekend. It was the second time jenhalldesigns was represented at the market, which is run by Craft Victoria to support and spotlight emerging designers just like me. Check out clog (the Craft Vic blog) for more pics and to check out the other great stallholders.

Cute and tiny wooden earrings turned out to be pretty popular.

New round 'summer' earrings just in time for ummmm... autumn!

Brand new 'stretch necklaces' making their debut, as were square polaroid style 'somewhere near here' brooches. These feature odd pictures of local places taken on our old school Diana camera, which have been transfered onto plywood and finished with a layer of resin...

and my new found love is STAPLING!!! out goes stitching paper- sooo 2008- the new attachment is the humble staple, very old school I know.

so this order was sent out to a lovely lady in Hobart who is transforming a gallery space and shop at 146a Elizabeth St, Hobart. opening in the new year, this space will stock lots of australian made wearable art and objects. sounds great, cant wait to see some pictures!

i love wearing these earrings. like the brooches, they are made from plywood, so they have the smooth 3 stripe wooden edge. they are also really light and wearable, sizes vary from cute tiny cubes to larger look at me studs.

each pair features 2 similar but non identical images, and each pair is of course totally individual. earrings are finished with resin for slightly reflective effect and have surgical steel back pin.

this project began with a trip to the Melbourne Museum with my camera. i got some great shots of birds and beetles, squid and butterflies. these surreal snapshots of life behind the glass have been captured as tiny earrings- the new 'at the museum' earrings series.

a stitch picture for my grandma....

combining screenprinted lines and abstract machine stitching, exploring textures and 'colouring in' with thread instead of coloured pencils. i love doing these.

it seems all i have been doing is making presents.... you spend the week making lovely things, wrapping and photographing and then you drop them in the post box and say bye bye.....

it is great giving one- off special gifts, especially imagining someone on the opposite side of the world wearing one of your pieces. ahhh but not the most financially rewarding! and i can never quite bring myself to make more than one of everything, at least not two in a row.

so this is a bag i made for my lovely friend kirsty. the fabric comes from an unpicked vintage japanese obi, and is strengthened with the original obi's starched lining (mmmm recycling....), the inside features denim coloured linen. the strap (also kimono silk) can be reversed and worn either with the cream pattern or the raw grey silk showing. strangely though it is called the 'marrakesh bag', this is a new style i have started working on based on my favourite ever leather embroidered bag i bought whilst travelling in morocco, which has the same fold over tube shape and is surprisingly practical.
